Scone Palace - The Coronation Site of Scottish Kings
Scone Palace, one of Scotland's most significant historical buildings, is located near the city of Perth and is an impressive example of the country's rich royal and political history. The magnificent palace was once the coronation site of Scottish kings and served as a center of royal power for centuries. Today, it is a magnificent castle with impressive architecture, valuable art collections, and beautiful gardens.

Historical Background and Significance
Scone Palace is situated on a site deeply rooted in Scottish history. As early as the 6th century, it was an important religious center that later became the seat of Scottish kings. The palace was built on the remains of the old Abbey of Scone, which played a central role in the coronation of Scottish monarchs.

A crucial symbol of Scottish coronations was the Stone of Scone, a sacred coronation stone on which the Scottish kings were anointed and crowned. In 1296, the stone was taken to London by King Edward I of England and integrated into the coronation chair at Westminster Abbey. It was only in 1996 that the stone was officially returned to Scotland and is now housed at Edinburgh Castle.

Architecture and Interior Design
The present-day Scone Palace was built in the early 19th century in the Neo-Gothic style, replacing an older castle from the 16th century. The impressive facade with its battlements, towers, and large windows gives the palace a majestic appearance.

The interior of the palace is equally impressive, featuring a rich collection of historical furniture, valuable artworks, and intricately designed rooms. Outstanding areas include:

- The Throne Room - once a place for solemn ceremonies, adorned with lavish decorations and portraits of Scottish monarchs.
- The Great Hall - a magnificent room with carved wooden ceilings, impressive tapestries, and a spectacular fireplace.
- The Library - housing over 6,000 historical books, one of Scotland's most valuable collections.
- The State Drawing Room - an elegant salon with ornate furniture, gilded embellishments, and paintings by famous artists.

The Gardens and Estate
Scone Palace is renowned not only for its architecture but also for its beautiful gardens and parklands. Visitors can explore the expansive green spaces, centuries-old trees, and intricately designed flower beds.

Highlights of the outdoor grounds include:

- The Magnificent Gardens - with lush flower beds, intricate hedges, and rare plant species, the gardens invite leisurely strolls.
- The Maze Garden - a modern, intricately designed maze reminiscent of historical hedge mazes.
- The Peacock Alley - home to a group of magnificent peacocks freely roaming the grounds, creating a fairy-tale atmosphere.
- The Old Coronation Mound - one of the most important sites in Scottish history, where Scottish kings were once crowned with Scottish nobles standing around them.

Connection to the Scottish Royal Family
Scone Palace has a close connection to the Scottish monarchy. In addition to the coronation of Scottish kings, the palace also served as the residence of prominent noble families, particularly the Mansfield family, who still manage the estate today.

Several historical figures have visited the palace, including Mary Queen of Scots, Bonnie Prince Charlie, and Queen Victoria. The influence of history is palpable in every corner of the palace, making it a vibrant testament to Scottish past.

Events and Activities for Visitors
Scone Palace offers a variety of activities and events throughout the year:

- Historical Tours - experts provide fascinating insights into the palace's history, coronation ceremonies, and life in Scottish nobility.
- Themed Events - from medieval fairs to garden markets, there are numerous events that keep the history and culture of the place alive.
- Nature and Wildlife Watching - the expansive estate is home to a variety of wildlife, including red deer, squirrels, and numerous bird species.
- Family-Friendly Experiences - children can explore the maze, play on the lawns, or participate in interactive programs.

Conclusion
Scone Palace is a gem of Scottish history that captivates visitors with its majestic architecture, deep historical significance, and breathtaking gardens. As the former coronation site of Scottish kings and home to the legendary Stone of Scone, the palace is one of Scotland's most important sites.

Whether one is interested in medieval history, royal traditions, impressive architecture, or picturesque landscapes, Scone Palace offers a unique opportunity to discover Scotland's rich heritage and immerse oneself in the world of the Scottish monarchy.

Wonderful garden walks through both formal garden areas and the Pinetum. Lots of bird life, squirrels, both red and grey, rabbits and roe deer. Walking through the forest is extremely peaceful, although I was there at a quiet time of day. Brian Cunningham, the head gardener,is very knowledgeable. The maze is good fun also. The garden is constantly changing and evolving so repeat visits,in different seasons, are recommended. The Walled Garden is well worth a visit. Although very much a work in progress it is starting to take shape. Would recommend a Spring/Summer visit. The palace and grounds are closed in January but reopen in February. Check their website for exact dates/ times

Sooo...if you didnt have plans to enjoy a fruit scone with clotted cream at Scone Palace, you should really make it a priority!!! Besides the amazing food, the palace does not disappoint, knowing that the family still resides in portions of the palace makes it even more magical! The grounds are beautiful and there is so much Scottish history to soak in. Plan more than a few hours to experience it all!!

Enough walks and things to see for a good day out with the kids. However, the house tour is interesting when it covers *history*, but please spare me the details and photos of a privileged family and lifestyle in 2024, which upon viewing, you realise your entrance fee is helping to sustain. The photo displays of recent events felt like a physical social media feed, showing off trips, lavish weddings and meetings with royals. I want to learn about history, save the other stuff for facebook (or whatever platform the privately educated use)

The Palace is stunning and replete with interesting history, expertly recounted by the extremely welcoming and knowledgeable visitor guides within. Just as impressive are the magnificent gardens which are a delight to walk around, even on a rainy day!
